Sarah Becker graduated from the Art Academy’s Design School in 2003 and then chose the needle, embroidery and the poetics of fabric and thread as her primary form of expression. As a painter, the works are created standing, her embroideries are sensuous and tactile and vary in size and motif.

Sarah Becker expresses herself through embroidery with a deep fascination for fabrics: structures, colors, sensitivity. But the embroidery is not traditional. Painting with needle and thread and pushing boundaries with self-created techniques to achieve a special expression. She works with rough threads, thick wool and all kinds of recycled materials, which have already been used and take on a new life in Becker’s works.

Like a painter, Sarah Becker works standing up, and insists that the embroidered works break with the traditional small scale. She works on a large scale to show the true artist she is. Becker is concerned with light and shadow, layers and colors. It highlights maturity, dissolution, and decay, often through enlarged objects and distorted proportions. She never struts but embroiders on top when she is not satisfied with the expression. Alternate between saturating surfaces so they take on a thick, sensual texture, and letting undecorated surfaces get the space they need. She works with layered works, which gives an extra dimension and an even stronger expression. As an artist, Becker’s trademark is her unique signature embroideries; Painting with needle and thread, Becker is always evolving, but always recognizable as Becker.
